El comienzo nuevo: Peru y Esperanza Verde

Captain´s log, Day 125: Who knew that Lima had over ten MILLION people?! It reminded me a lot of Los Angeles...needless to say, my friend Genny and I were glad to leave and head towards our new positions in the Peruvian Amazon at the Esperanza Verde wildlife rescue center. A quick preview--we have a boat to catch, and then it´s no electricity and no contact until we come back to the city!

BENVENIDOS A PERU.

Wow.

I have so many comments I´d like to make on the slight differences in culture we´ve seen so far in Peru in comparison to Ecuador---or how hilarious (and mildly offensive) it is that everyone keeps calling Genny ´la japonesa´---but I just don´t have the TIME!

There are OVER 1800 BIRDS IN PERU. I have eleven new species without attempting to birdwatch. Already.
Like these West Peruvian Doves, who competed valiantly with the Rock Doves in downtown Lima. Crazy.

We flew into Pucallpa, Peru last night, and are headed two hours north into the forest this very morning.

Main mode of transport in Pucallpa? These 'motocarros'.

Travel-worn and SO EXCITED TO GET TO THE SELVA! Crazy to be back in the tropics together . It´s been six and a half years since we traveled to Ecuador in high school!

A good friend of the project, Maria, put us up for the night in some lovely wooden rooms with comfy mattresses and frogsong in the backyard. Thanks, Maria!

Because I don´t have the time to write it all out, you should check out the Esperanza Verde website for more information. Genny and I will be working for Esperanza Verde for a month or so, getting to know the state of conservation in the Peruvian Amazon and taking care of animals that have been injured in surrounding Amazonian towns...or seized from traffickers. More on the center once we´ve spent some time there! Not sure what our internet availability will be, so apologies if it´s a week or a few before I put up another post.

For now, I´ve got a boat to catch.

Cheers, all. Que chevere.
