Volunteer Opportunities for Biologists and Spanish Speakers in Ecuador, Guatemala, Peru, Brazil, and Costa Rica

Captain's Log, Day 150: I have had so many people ask me about how they can do what I've been doing this year. The short answer is get your passport and/or visa in order, check the health/safety regulations, send some emails to locals and get DOWN here to figure it out yourself; the long answer is in this post. If you're interested in sustainable living projects, conservation biology, field ecology, veterinary medicine or wildlife rescue, conservation education, forestry, natural history and/or biological cataloging and display design, or just learning about life in other parts of the world, you should check this out.

I'll list interests and countries; check out the related blog entries and project sites. All of these opportunities are (unfortunately) unpaid (unless you apply for a number of available conservation and sustainability grants and scholarships), and you will probably have to pay your airfare and living costs. Fortunately, this doesn't run too steep: life in Central and South America is much more affordable than summer life in the States. And the experiences are so worth the costs.

PROTIP: the places I've listed here have excellent connections with OTHER projects seeking volunteers, so if you don't see what you're looking for here, send them an email and ask if they know other places in the area! This method is basically how I found all my work for my gap year.

If you're looking for CONTACTS, please visit the websites I provide, or contact me directly at:

See this? This is what I'm talking about. If you can save the money to cover the travel, this kind of experience is incomparable.
